    • Kuujjuaq Club Celebrates Inaugural Year with Fast and Female Weekend

      April 11, 2012

Kuujjuaq, QC (April 5, 2012) – After experiencing a Fast and Female event last month at the Haywood Ski Nationals, the girls of Kuujjuaq, Quebec, will be the hosts for an exciting cross country ski weekend of their own on April 13-15.

Fast and Female, a program launched seven years ago by 2006 Olympic gold medallist Chandra Crawford, is having a weekend of fun for girls ages, 9-19 that will include games, a Real Beauty photo shoot, inspirational talks, skill workshops, as well as dance and yoga. The weekend will conclude with a friendly race.

One year ago, Junior National Team member Camille Pepin organized and launched the first ever ski club for young women in Kuujjuaq, Quebec. She was trying to give the girls the opportunity to exercise in a motivating group and learn values and skills such as leadership, self-esteem, and a healthy lifestyle. She wanted to share the benefits she got from skiing with those who might not have access to such resources.

After finding funding for a coach, ski equipment and a groomer, the girls trained hard all year long. Ten girls were brought south to Mont-Ste-Anne for the Haywood Ski Nationals and spent a week cheering and watching competitive racing as well as participating in the Fast and Female event on March 18.

Now, Pepin will travel up to Kuujjuaq along with fellow Centre National d’ENtraînement Pierre Harvey (CNEPH) member, Frédérique Vézina, and coach Catherine Dumont-Poirier to experience the results of the last year.

“I can't wait to learn a little more and to see with my own eyes such an interesting culture that I only got a glimpse of in Mont Sainte-Anne!” said an excited Pepin.

All participants will take home a Fast and Female t-shirt, Buff as well as goodies from the organization’s sponsors including Clarins and Cold-FX.

“The Fast and Female Kuujuuaq weekend for girls will mark our second aboriginal outreach initiative of the winter,” explained Marie-Hélène Thibeault, Executive Director for Fast and Female.

“In early April, we hosted the third annual Northern Youth Empowerment Weekend in the Northwest Territories where Sarah Daitch, Sharon Firth and Betsy Mawdsley successfully inspired 35 enthusiastic female cross country skiers. It’s wonderful to be partnering with Camille and her team to bring the Fast and Female message to Northern Quebec where girls also have so much to gain from being active and striving for their dreams.”

Fast and Female would like to thank the Kuujjuaq Municipality, the Unaluk-Safer Communities Program Brighter Futures, Best Buy Canada, Clarins Canada, Cold-FX, Buff Canada, Sportchek, Rossignol, Globo Shoes, Cross Country Canada, Lululemon Athletica, LUNA Bars, LIT Glitter, SAUCE Headwear, Champion System for helping make this event possible.

Fast and Female would also like to acknowledge the significant contribution of the Jokabeca Foundation at the Calgary Foundation for their support of its aboriginal-specific programs.
