    • 2017 World Cup Finals Canadian Team Selection Process Update

      March 14, 2017

      Cross Country Ski de fond Canada (CCC) published an updated World Cup Final team announcement and synopsis of the selection process on March 10. This selection list was revised due to some CPL points errors in calculations. Cross Country Ski de fond Canada takes full responsibility for the error and apologizes for any inconvenience this process may have caused. We understand the importance of a polished selection process and the impact it has on athletes at all levels. CCC believes in a fair, equitable and transparent selection process.

      CCC would like to update the community on the following appeal process that unfolded after the selection notice on March 8 was posted:
      • An athlete appealed to the CCC that there was an arbitrary and inconsistent range of races used to determine the selection for the WC Final and failure of CCC to follow the Sport Resolution and Dispute Centre of Canada’s recommendations for transparent selection.
      • As per the CCC process for hearing appeals, an internal appeal panel was established;
      • The internal appeal panel upheld the appeal from the athlete.  For CCC, the decision created uncertainty regarding whether the criteria was acceptable. CCC decided to appeal the decision.
      • As per the second step of the CCC appeal process, CCC took its appeal to the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) for clarification on the following:  to clarify if the races chosen by the CCC Selection Committee to form the basis of selection for the Quebec World Cup Final were reasonable and appropriate. The opinion given by the SDRCC Arbitrator supported that the races chosen by CCC were reasonable.
      At the conclusion of the season, in an effort to ensure this type of error does not occur again, Shane Pearsall, CEO of CCC will lead a complete review of the use of CPL for selecting future teams and the process that CCC uses to communicate the criteria to the cross country community.

      CCC congratulates the 30 athletes (15 women and 15 men) who will represent Canada at the World Cup Finals in Quebec City, March 17-19, 2017.

      An updated list of selected athletes will be posted tomorrow.
