    "
Skiers are made in the summer” is how the saying goes, which means summer is dryland training camp season.

Although there were likely many provincial, regional and club camps happening in July, the two that I attended were with the Ontario, and New Brunswick/Nova Scotia athletes.

In early July, Highlands Nordic was host to the Ontario Talent Squad.  The hilly terrain of the Blue Mountains is ideal training ground for rollerskiing, trail running, volume training and intensity work.  The athletes were involved in technique development on rollerskis, circuit strength training, ski walking technique, water sprints on Wasaga Beach, orienteering and trail running. A nutrition, yoga and introductory sport psych session were included in the week. The close vicinity to Georgian Bay was ideal for the hot training days we experienced.  See video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrkXYdXBNZI

The second training camp was held July 9 to 12 in Fredericton, NB. The camp was held again on the beautiful University of New Brunswick campus close to the historic downtown of Fredericton.  Twenty five NB and NS athletes met for a 3.5 day camp. Focus again was on skill development on rollerskis, ski walking, strength weight training zoning in on proper technique, with fun activities such as geocaching, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. Athletes also took part in yoga, smoothie making and psychology training.

All athletes were given a good start to the training season and we hope they will capitalize on it next winter.
