    • Ski Tour Canada will open in Gatineau next month

      It was a throwaway line at the conclusion of a press conference in Gatineau on Friday — “Winter is coming,” borrowed from the TV show, Game of Thrones.

      But, man, with 150 of the best cross-country skiers in the world on the way in what promises to be a free-for-all on snow, winter is certainly about to heat up right across the river from Ottawa.

      With downtown Gatineau, the Canadian Museum of History and Parliament Hill providing a postcard-like backdrop, Jacques-Cartier Park will be the site of the most electric of all cross-country ski races on March 1.

      Gatineau will host the opening stage of Ski Tour Canada 2016 — in this case, a 1.7-km (two laps) free technique sprint race, attracting competitors from 25 countries.
