Olympian on a mission … making a difference on path to podium

January, 24, 2014 (Toronto, Ontario) – Soon to be two-time Olympian Perianne Jones is determined to achieve her goal of reaching the podium in Sochi. Putting in the time and effort to help her achieve her dream is only a part of her motivation. Jones has a secret weapon … a desire to help make education possible for children. This deep motivation to bring education to children in Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, is often the difference maker when Jones feels like she can’t dig deeper … the higher purpose to her Olympic dream of owning the podium.

“Right now my focus is on Sochi. There’s no room for distraction or anything else. It’s that simple,” shared Jones from Seiser Alm, Italy, during the cross country ski team pre Olympic training camp. “However, everyone needs a higher purpose motivation to support them when things get off track or focus wanes. For me, that motivation is SchoolBOX.”

SchoolBOX is a national charity whose mission is to ‘Make Education Possible’ for all children. The Canadian charity was founded by Tom Affleck in 2006, while in a tiny village in Northern Nicaragua. Affleck was inspired to create the charity after seeing firsthand the power of a notebook and a pencil. Since that time, the charity has grown and has now just completed building its 50th school, a remarkable feat in such a short period of time.

“Today, Cprovides an opportunity for each of us to make a difference in the lives of children who are living on less than $2 a day. Through education, we bring hope to the children we serve and help them realize their potential in the world,” said SchoolBOX executive director Sarah Kerr, who grew up with Jones in Almonte, Ontario. “Having Perianne get behind SchoolBOX has been such a gift. It shows that when we work together to ‘Make Education Possible’, we really can defeat poverty. It is extraordinary that Perianne is using her Olympic journey to give a voice to some of the world’s poorest children. We are so proud of her.”

Following the Olympic Winter Games, Jones plans to head to Nicaragua to help build a school she has been actively involved in fundraising for. Her teammate Emily Nishikawa from Whitehorse, who also made the 2014 Olympic Team, will be going to Nicaragua with Jones. The ‘Ski 4 SchoolBOX’ fundraiser was initiated last fall by Jones and hopes to raise $10,000 for a sports area at the new Jardines de Apoyo school. “While this seems so far away, the idea that people from across the country are inspired to raise money for children thousands of miles away reminds me of how proud I am to be Canadian. I know that I will carry the hearts of many when I head to Sochi … this alone fuels my desire to bring everything I have, and then some,” stated Jones.

SchoolBOX is a registered Canadian Charity (# 83870 1324 RR0001) that helps children access primary education in Nicaragua by building schools, providing school supplies, libraries and sports initiatives. The charity unites people who have a common vision to ‘Make Education Possible’ and is comprised of thousands of people from different faiths and socioeconomic backgrounds.
