AltaGas Ski-at-school program begins its fourth year

    January 23, 2013

CALGARY, AB (Jan. 16, 2013) - Winter is now in full swing in Calgary and the crew of the Foothills Nordic Ski Club is back running the AltaGas Ski-at-school program for the 4th consecutive year. This introduction program to cross country skiing kicked off this week at the Mayland Heights School and will continue through mid March (see below for the full schedule, weather permitting). Thanks to the support of AltaGas the FNSC is able to provide track setting, equipment and first class coaching.

It is just a great sight to see the very youngest ones try out a new sport in a very playful way. The kids are being introduced to the sport by professional coaches through playing games, learning how to fall and how the equipment works. Not only provides the AltaGas Ski-at-school program an introduction to cross country skiing but also to an active lifestyle. The smiling faces just tell the whole story…they are loving this!

The success is overwhelming and requests from schools increase every year. The first year the program ran in three schools and this winter it’s up and running in five schools. Marlene Augsten, program manager for the AltaGas Ski-at-school program adds: ”our JackRabbit programs have been overflowing and there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people learning to cross-country ski on the trails. Of course, we cannot attribute this all to our program, but the program helps to make the sport accessible to the general public at a very young age. We feel privileged to receive such great support from AltaGas. It’s great to see a company support a sport from grass roots to the very highest level.”

The project has also received huge support from Cross Country Canada, Canada’s National Sports Federation. "We are thrilled with the success of the program. Finding ways to provide cross-country ski opportunities for school children in Canada is incredibly important for the growth and development of our sport. We are happy to see AltaGas supporting such a great program and we commend Foothills Nordic for their efforts in building and delivering the program and sharing their passion for skiing with young students and teachers throughout the Calgary school system”, says Matthew Jeffries, Director of Business Development at Cross Country Canada.
