Cold weather continued to plague the Haywood NorAm in Sovereign Lake, BC as the Buff sprints took place at -17 deg. C. weather.

Foothills Nordic's U23 skier, Heidi Widmer, continued her strong performance capturing the classic, sprint qualifying race by 1.5 seconds ahead of Alysson Marshall of Larch Hills. Jennifer Jackson of Team Hardwood was 3rd and the top junior.

On the men's side, first year senior Raphaƫl Couturier of Skibec was the top skier in qualifying as classic sprint powerhouse Phil Widmer of Canmore Nordic was 2nd and Knute Johnsgaard of Whitehorse was 3rd,(the top U23 athlete). The top junior was Matthew Saurette of Rocky Mountain Racers, .06 seconds ahead of Nakkertok's Colin Foley.

      Qualifying results

In the Buff sprint final it was Patrick Stewart-Jones of Nakkertok, who came through to claim his first NorAm victory. With 100 metres to go Patrick was 3rd behind Phil Widmer of Canmore and Graeme Killick of Ptarmigan, but turned on the afterburners to claim the victory.

As the top U23 athlete for 2 races in a row, Stewart-Jones looks to have the early edge in qualifying  for the U23 World Championships in February.

In the women's Buff sprint, Andrea Dupont of Rocky Mountain Racers, skied solidly through the heats and the final to claim her 3rd NorAm victory, all gained in classic sprints. Alysson Marshall of Larch Hills was 2nd and Emily Nishikawa of Whitehorse 3rd. Foothill's Heidi Widmer finished 4th, placing as the top U23 skier for the 2nd day in a row and like Stewart-Jones staking an early claim to a position on the U23 championship team.

The races are also part of the selection process for the World Junior team and Matthew Saurette of Rocky Mountain Racers skied to 1st in the junior men's event ahead of US racer Patrick Caldwell of Dartmouth and Ben Wilkinson-Zan of Nakkertok in 3rd. Scott Hill of Team Hardwood was the 3rd Canadian.

The junior women's race was captured by Dahria Beatty of Whitehorse, with Sarah Beaudry of Caledonia Nordic 2nd and Katherine Stewart-Jones of Nakkertok in 3rd.
