    • Haywood LIVE Report: Para Nordic World Cup and World Jr/U23 Championships underway this week

      January 24, 2014

The Haywood LIVE Report is powered by Haywood Securities Inc. - a proud sponsor of the National Cross Country Ski Team

It is a bit of a quiet weekend on the ski circuit, the calm before the storm, as next week the World Jr/U23 championships, the Haywood Canadian Eastern Championships/Para Nordic Nationals and the Toblach World Cup all get underway. Shortly after, all eyes will be on Sochi.

Ongoing this week is a Para-Nordic Biathlon World Cup in Oberried, Germany. PEI skier Mark Arendz is the sole Canadian competing and yesterday skied to a strong 5th place finish, 7 seconds from the podium, in the 7.5k event.

      1) Jan 23-26:  Para-Nordic World Cup, Oberried, Germany.
Mark Arendz is the sole Canadian competing.

      2) Jan 29- Feb. 3: World Junior and U23 Championships, Val di Fiemme, Italy.
Canada will send a strong team to the World Junior and U23 Championships to be held in Val di Fiemme, Italy. Team Announcement

On the U23 side, Heidi Widmer will lead the team after dominating the trials and also qualifying for the Olympic team in Sochi. Heidi is an experienced competitor having previously raced at 4 World Junior Championships and 2 U23 events. Patrick Stewart-Jones was at the top or near the top in all events on the men's side and will be looking to the 15k classic event as his best chance for a top level placing.

The junior women's team is also quite experienced at this level and look to be led by Katherine Stewart-Jones who also came through on top, or near the top at the trials races. Look for a good result in the relay, where the depth of the women's team may best show through. For the men, the trials were less clear cut, with strong competition for places and any of the team having the potential for a strong individual effort at the event.

There is not expected to be television coverage of the event, however Live Timing could be in place on the FIS site.
