Coaches for FISU 2011 Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey Announced

    Mark Tierney , who will be the head coach,  has a long history of ski racing including spending 5 years as a member of NTDC Thunder Bay and 10 years on the Newfoundland Ski Team. As a coach he worked with team Manitoba, Lakehead University, Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club, Blow-Me-Down Ski Club, and currently with, the Newfoundland the ski team.  He has attended 4 Canada Games and over 20 different National Championship events as an athlete or coach. Most recently, he spent over 2 weeks supervising the athlete compound at the Olympics. It will be great to have such an experienced coach who can bring the flavor of the east.


    Sara Nielson from Whitehorse will be the assistant coach. She  has been the Assistant Coach/technician for Team Yukon at many national-level competitions including: Canada Winter Games, National & Western Championships, NORAMS, World Junior Trials, Arctic Winter Games, Alaskan/FIS race series and as Head Coach at the National Championships and Arctic Winter Games. Sara’s multi language skills and northern expertise will prove her a valuable member of the staff.

    Team leader/ manager for the Games is Mary Waddell – a veteran of three previous world university games in Tarvisio and Torino, Italy and Harbin, China in 2009. Through the years, she has coached for Laurentian Nordic and Laurentian University and volunteered with Rocky Mt. Racers at the US championships and Strathcona Nordics at the Haig . She coached with the Ontario team at Silverstar and Colorado spring series and led the Yukon team to the Arctic Winter games in Alaska. Currently she is still assisting with Laurentian Nordic but spends most of winter far away from Sudbury officiating at World Cups, the Olympics and national championships.

    Currently, qualifying athletes are being contacted and the team will be announced by June 5.
