Over 480 athletes enjoyed the hospitality and friendly confines of Whitehorse, Yukon at the 89th Canadian National Cross Country Ski Championships this past March. Many thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who provided the athletes, their support staff and family fans a memorable and exciting experience. It was the second time in the past 6 seasons the Ski Nationals have been held north of the 69th parallel.
Special thanks to Air North who, as a major sponsor of the event, went out of their way to ensure luggage and ski equipment stranded in Vancouver made it safely and quickly to Whitehorse. The gift wrapped cookies handed out by Air North staff to coaches and managers who picked up team luggage late Thursday night were appreciated by all.
The Haywood’s, as they are known in Whitehorse, were enriched this year by the presence and participation of the entire National Ski Team who journeyed to Whitehorse after finishing the grueling 8 race Ski Tour Canada 2016 event. Alex Harvey showed all in attendance why he is the best skier in Canada by wrapping up 4 gold medals in the open men’s category while hometown favourites Emily Nishikawa and Dahria Beatty put on a friendly but spirited duel over the 7 days of competition. The two athletes shared 2 gold and 1 silver medal each over the course of the event.
