Canada at the World Juniors and U23 Championships Part 6: 2010+

    January 15, 2013

Hinterzarten, Germany was the site of the 2010 Championships. For the U23's Brittany Webster had solid 5th and 8th place finishes in distance and Kate Brennan was the top sprinter in 21st. The sprint was also a good event on the men's side with Julien Nury 7th and Lenny Valjas tied for 8th. Fred Touchette and Graeme Killick were 6th and 7th in the skiathlon and Kevin Sandau the top Canadian in the classic distance race.

The Juniors events saw Heidi Widmer 22nd in the sprint, Dahria Beatty (with 3 more years of eligibility) 25th in the 5k and Marlis Kromm the top skier in the skiathlon.  Zach Holland was the top distance skier for the Canadian men, with Joey Burton one place back in the 10k classic, Patrick Stewart-Jones led the team in the sprint.

For 2011 the events took place for the first time in Estonia at Otepää . Alex Harvey continued to break new ground on the international circuit capturing gold in the U23, 30k skiathlon. Alex had left the World Cup circuit to ski specifically in that event. Kevin Sandau had a 5th place finish in the other distance event, with Jesse Cockney and Lenny Valjas 6th and 7th respectively in the sprint. For the women Alysson Marshall was tops in the sprint in 12th and shared distance honours with Emily Nishikawa.

At the junior level it was Janelle Greer sharing honours with Annika Hicks, and for the men, Andy Shields leading Canadians in distance and Patrick Stewart-Jones in the sprint.

The 2012 Championships went to the exotic location of Erzurum, Turkey an event interestingly punctuated by several races that were run near the lower limit of temperatures set by FIS.

The juniors had Janelle Greer as the top skier in the sprint, with her Yukon team mate Dahria Beatty splitting the distance races with Ann-Marie Comeau  (3 years of eligibility remaining) giving a strong performance, 18th in the skiathlon.  Geoff Richards was 20th for the men in the skiathlon and Alexis Turgeon led the other 2 events with 33rd place finishes.

At U23 Graeme Killick topped the Canadian results in all 3 events with Heidi Widmer tops in the sprint and another Yukon skier, Emily Nishikawa leading the Canadian charge in distance.
